After dealing with the increase in pests during the summer months, it’s easy to assume you can “fall” back on your regular treatments and that you’re home free during the cooler seasons. Wrong! Unfortunately, there is no decrease in pest prevalence during the cooler months, just a change in species. In fact, the cooler months bring rodents, spiders, and cockroaches scrambling to find shelter and food. Here are a few fall pest control tips to keep your autumn festivities and upcoming holidays pest-free:
Seal Exterior Openings
To pests of any type, openings in a home are seen as an invitation to come on in. Avoid this by sealing cracks and crevices on the outside of the home; don’t forget about areas where utilities and pipes are as well. Add screens to vents and chimney openings and be sure to repair damaged screens as critters can find their way in through these. Finally, install door sweeps on exterior doors.
Store Food Properly
One of the main reasons some pests head inside is not simply to escape cooler weather, but they’re in search of food as resources become scarcer in the cooler months. Store food in airtight containers to keep these unwanted pests out. Regular disposal of garbage can help this problem as well. Be sure to use receptacles with a lid and empty on a regular basis.
Firewood is a breeding ground for pests. They often seek shelter in these dark, moist places. Storing firewood at least 20 feet away from your home will decrease the likeliness of this. This can also help avoid any potential termite infestations. Garbage cans and recycling bins should be kept a significant distance away from your home as well, as pests will flock to those receptacles in search of food.
Other good tips to remember are to eliminate moistures sites, replacing loose mortar and weather stripping around windows and any basement foundation.
