How Weather Influences Rodent Infestations

Fall in our region brings a mixed bag of weather which leads to a cluster of varying pests that may try to invade your home. While the temperature is finally beginning to cool down, autumn also means an increased likelihood of hurricanes or tropical storm conditions, making September through November cool and damp. A perfect storm for pests like mosquitoes and mice.

The temperatures are dropping, but we’re not the only ones heading indoors. Be on the lookout for droppings, gnaw marks on food items and wooden surfaces such as door corners, and to listen for scratching or scurrying sounds in the walls, attic and other crawlspaces in your home. You can also protect your home from rodents by:

  1. Securing your home from the outside. Seal cracks and holes on the outside of the home, paying special attention to areas where utilities and pipes enter the home. Replace loose mortar and weather stripping around the basement foundation and windows.
  2. Playing “keep away.” Store firewood at least 20 feet from the home and five feet off the ground. Keep shrubbery and tree branches cut back from the house.
  3. Eliminating all moisture sites, including leaking pipes, clogged drains, and areas around the home where water may collect.

We’ve talked about it before, but weather can play a large role in the habits of mosquitoes and other pesky bugs. Because we live in Eastern North Carolina, we’re lucky to experience a mild fall and winter season that doesn’t get too cold. But with the mix of moderate temperatures and large downfall of rain during hurricane season, it’s important that homeowners keep a look out for areas where water collects around their homes as these can be breeding grounds for mosquitoes.

Keep an eye out for other pests too! Wet leaves, tall grass and damp wood all foster a breeding ground for mosquitoes, fleas, ticks and spiders. And it is possible to see a problem with roaches as they flee from water and find the dry refuge of the home most appealing.
